Overview:

Pyramid of Pepi I is the oldest and best preserved pyramid in Egypt. Built during the Old Kingdom period, it stands at a height of about 62 metres (203 ft), making it the tallest of all the pyramids in Egypt. Located at its present location in the area of Saqqara, the pyramid dates back to 24th century BC and consists of six steps, making it a stepped pyramid. It was built for Pepi I, the second king of the Sixth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, in about 2,325 BC. The pyramid complex includes a main structure, along with a Valley Temple with a complex system of galleries, one of which is decorated with five scenes depicting the god Horus defeating his enemies. Along with this, the complex also includes a pair of massive granite statues, an offering chapel and a causeway that links the main pyramid entrance with the valley temple. History:

The Pyramid of Pepi I is an ancient Egyptian structure located west of Giza on the edge of the Sahara desert. The pyramid is thought to have been commissioned by Pepi’s son, Merenre, and designed by Imhotep, although historians are not certain of its origins or purpose. It is the smallest of the surviving pyramids of Ancient Egypt, measuring just 24 meters high and 53 meters wide at its base. The Pyramid of Pepi I is also the only surviving pyramid built in mud-brick, an unconventional construction material which is more durable and requires less labor than a stone pyramid. As a result, the monument has fared better than many of its stone counterparts, and has withstood the ravages of time and weather much more effectively. Inside the pyramid is a central chamber which contains a sarcophagus thought to have been that of Merenre, along with two niches bearing statues of catlike figures thought to depict Pepi I’s ka (soul) or ba (personality).
