Overview:

is the remains of a 4th Dynasty pyramid built for Pharaoh Neferefre, a son of the Pharaoh Khufu who built the Great Pyramid at Giza. It is located at the southern edge of the Abusir necropolis, close to the Pyramid of Sahure. Archaeologists believe that the pyramid was originally going to be much larger than it was completed, but it was abandoned after Neferefre's death. Today, it is in a ruined state and only a few courses of its limestone blocks remain. It is one of the most beautiful monuments in Egypt

History:

The Pyramid of Neferefre, located at the Abusir Necropolis near Cairo, Egypt, is believed to have been constructed during the Fifth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom as a funerary monument for Neferefre, the fifth ruler of the dynasty. The pyramid is small in comparison to some of the other pyramids built in the area, but it is still an impressive structure. It was likely originally constructed with limestone, but is now partially ruined due to sand and stone quarrying and erosions. The pyramid was likely originally about 30 meters high with four steps on the sides and a mound of rubble at the top. The pyramid is unique among the other pyramids of the Old Kingdom as its entrance is located on the northern face, rather than on the eastern face. Also, the burial chamber is located directly beneath the pyramid’s entrance, rather than on a lower step as in pyramids of the Old Kingdom. There is also evidence that the pyramid was not finished when it was abandoned, which might suggest that Neferefre died before the pyramid was completed. The discovery of the Pyramid of Neferefre is significant because it provides an example of a monument that is distinct from the other larger pyramids of the Old Kingdom. It is also the first pyramid discovered at Abusir, the necropolis about 10 kilometers south of Giza and Saqqara, and is the only Fifth Dynasty royal pyramid discovered in Abusir. The Pyramid of Neferefre was first excavated by German Egyptologist Ludwig Borchardt between 1926 and 1929.
