History:

The Museum of Artistic Culture of Moscow was established in 1917, when the Moscow Soviet of People's Commissars passed the decree of its formation. It was conceived of as a museum of art and technology, and the first exhibition was held in 1919. The Museum was designed to capitalize on the modernist ideas of the avant-garde movement, exhibiting works from the world of painting, sculpture, architecture and theater. It also hosted special exhibitions dedicated to the art of the day and to exhibitions of works of famous foreign and domestic artists. In 1923, the Museum was renamed the State Museum of Fine Arts and relocated to the Alexander Palace in Tsaritsyno Park. The new museum was dedicated to the promotion of fine art and artistic culture in Russia. The Museum continued to exist throughout the Soviet period, expanding its collections and exhibitions while also preserving Russian artistic culture. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Moscow Artistic Culture Museum was established as a state body, and today it houses the largest collection of visual art in Russia.
