Huaca Cao Viejo is an archaeological site located in the Moche Valley near Trujillo, Peru. It is a Pre-Columbian adobe pyramid temple, dedicated to the Moche deity of thunder and rain. The temple belonged to the Moche culture, which flourished in Peru from the 1st to the 8th centuries AD. Huaca Cao Viejo was first excavated by the archaeologist Julio C. Tello in the 1920s. upon investigation, Tello discovered a funerary site and malacocha, a type of ritual offering associated with the Moche culture. After further research on site, Tello uncovered an extensive collection of finely crafted pottery, gold, silver, copper, and textile artifacts, many of which were likely used for ritual offerings. In 1982, the site was further excavated by the American archeologist Christopher Donnan. Donnan uncovered two painted burial chambers beneath the pyramid, both of which contained extraordinary archaeological artifacts. One of the chambers contained the remains of an adult male, who appeared to have been a high-ranking Moche official.
