The First African Baptist Church was organized in 1773 by former slaves and free blacks. The church was organized in Silver Bluff, South Carolina, in the region of Silver Bluff on the Savannah River. After their pastor, George Liele, moved to Savannah in 1775, the church relocated there. Under the leadership of Reverend Andrew Bryan and several other pastors, the congregation steadily grew.
