Comunidad de Cristo In Peru: History,Facts, & Services

History:

and Legacy Comunidad de Cristo In Peru is a movement of grassroots Christian mission activity started in Peru in 1949 by American Baptist missionaries Robert and Margaret Smith. Initially focused on networking and developing the spiritual lives of Peruvian Protestants, it has since grown into a larger faith-based organization with a variety of ministries and programs directed towards the spiritual and social development of the Peruvian people. The Smiths’ vision was to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and bring about a change in the lives of Peruvian people through developing local church leadership. The Smiths established the Centro de Estudio Social de Iglesias Peruanas (CESIP) in 1957. This organization worked to promote education, health, and cultural projects in Peru. CESIP promotes Bible training programs and church leadership courses for Peruvian pastors. They also have a library and research center in Lima where pastoral research and writing is done on a variety of topics in pastoral care, education and church growth. In 1973, the Smiths founded Comunidad de Cristo en el Perú, an agency responsible for undertaking the practical tasks of the Christian mission in Peru, such as organizing youth-ministry camps and training in agricultural engineering, in order to provide a means of self-sufficiency for the people. They currently focus on helping the rural communities of Peru to develop spiritually, economically, and emotionally. Comunidad de Cristo en el Perú also partners with governmental and non-governmental organizations in order to provide better access to resources and better opportunities. They participate in a variety of international projects and programs to address environmental, economic, social, and political issues at the national, as well as the international level. Nowadays, CESIP continues to be active in the life of churches in Peru and Latin America by providing support in areas such as theology, social work, and health care.
