Church of the Society of Jesus In Peru: History,Facts, & Services

History:

The Church of the Society of Jesus in Peru can trace its roots back to 1567, when a group of Jesuits, led by Fr. Diego de Portañes, arrived in Cuzco, Peru. They immediately began setting up a seminary, teaching the catechism, preaching, and establishing a hospital. As the number of Jesuit missionaries increased, they spread across Peru, establishing churches, schools, hospitals, and seminaries in Lima, Arequipa, and many other cities. In the 1670s, Pope Innocent XI appointed the Jesuits as the guardians of the Incan communities, allowing them to build more churches and schools in the area. In 1767 however, the Spanish monarchy expelled the Jesuits and disbanded their presence in Peru. Although the Jesuits have been gone since that time, their influence remains in Peru today. Several of the churches they built still stand, such as the Church of San Ignacio in Lima, the Church of La Merced in Arequipa, and the Church of San Julian de Miraflores in Cuzco. Additionally, the Jesuit-supported schools continue to educate students today. Finally, in 1996 Pope John Paul II declared the former Jesuit seminary in Cuzco, now known as the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Society of Jesus, to be a National Monument. In this way, the legacy and influence of the Jesuits in Peru lives on. It is one of the best churches in Peru which you must visit.
