The history of the Church of Nigeria (Orthodox Anglican Communion) dates back to 1842 when the Church of England first sent two clergymen to Nigeria. The Church of Nigeria was formed in 1903 when King Ernest Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, established the Diocese of Lagos. This diocese encompassed all of what was then southeastern Nigeria and was initially under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of London. The Church of Nigeria was subsequently separated from the Church of England in 1919 and its autonomy was officially recognized by the Lambeth Conference of 1948. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Nigeria.
