The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and was established around the twelfth century as a Roman Catholic parish church. It is believed to have been built as part of a Benedictine monastery. The church was renovated and rebuilt in the nineteenth century and is now home to a number of valuable works of art, including a fresco painting by the artist Orazio Giuliani.
