: The Büyük Mecidiye Mosque - Ortaköy, Istanbul is one of the most important Ottoman imperial mosques in Istanbul. Büyük Mecidiye Mosque, located in the Ortaköy neighborhood of Istanbul, Turkey, is a historic Ottoman mosque constructed in 1854 by Sultan Abdülmecit I. The architecture of the mosque is mainly Ottoman Baroque in style, characterized by an impressive 40+ meters high central dome and four tall minarets, all of which are adorned with Quranic inscriptions. Its façade is adorned with rose- and cauliflower-shaped stone motifs. Inside, the ornamentation mainly comprises of a variety of color marble and floral motifs, painted in red, blue, yellow, and green, as well as painted wood details. Additionally, the mosque features a large complex of 23 domes, each arranged around the central dome in a circular formation. The central dome’s exterior walls are coated in a belt of green ceramic tiles, culminating in a golden crescent at the top. The octagonal mihrab (prayer niche) is also coated in turquoise-blue ceramic tiles, and is decorated with geometrical and floral motifs.
