History:

The history of Bondi Beach is a captivating one, spanning thousands of years of indigenous practices and more recent developments from early European settlers to contemporary tourism. The area had been used by the Eora people for fishing and other activities for thousands of years, and in 1770 the first European, Lieutenant James Cook, landed on what is now known as Kurnell Peninsula. The area was known as a ship wrecking site due to the many perilous rocks, and later as a whale-watching destination and a place of summer respite from the heat of the Australian Outback. The name Bondi is thought to have come from the Aboriginal word 'Boondi', which means 'waves breaking over rocks'. In 1851 the first permanent landholders arrived, shortly followed by more based on Ben Buckler Point, which was a camping ground used by fishermen and their families for decades. In 1882 the local council laid a foundation stone for a new bathing pavilion and jetty which provided the community with somewhere to relax, build sandcastles and swim. The first lifesaving club was formed in 1906 and later the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club was formed, now known as Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club. This club has been hailed as the birthplace of Australian surf culture and was the first to develop a full lifesaving program for beachgoers. As the popularity of the beach grew, so did the restaurants, cafés and other businesses, as well as infrastructure like the iconic beach site baths. This has allowed Bondi Beach to become one of the most recognised beaches in the world and continues its popularity today as an iconic summer destination.
