The mosque was founded in 972 as a madrasa or theological school by the Fatimid Dynasty ruler Al Mu’izz Li-Din Allah. The Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque is located in the historic Islamic quarter ofFustat, Cairo. It is in close proximity to the famous Khan al-Khalili bazaar and the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan. The mosque can be accessed by public transportation. The nearest Metro station is the Giza Station, located approximately 7.5 km away. Taxis to Fustat can also be arranged from this station. Buses and minibuses are also available from other parts of Cairo and run regularly to Fustat. The mosque is open to the public daily from 7:00am to 10:00pm.
