The Al-Azhar Mosque is an ancient Islamic mosque and university in Cairo, Egypt. The mosque was originally built in 970 CE on the orders of the Fatimid Caliph Al-Mu'izz. The original structure was rebuilt in the 11th century and has since been renovated and expanded numerous times. The Al-Azhar Mosque is constructed in a U-shape with a vast courtyard in the middle, allowing for the majority of the mosque to be enclosed in a small area. The mosque consists of three minarets, the tallest of which stands 97 meters high, four madrassas (schools of Islamic law), an auditorium and a library. The mosque is encircled by a high wall and it boasts several intricately carved entrances, including the main entrance which is the largest. The interior walls of the mosque are decorated with intricate tiles and inscriptions from the Quran, while the mosque's minarets and domes are adorned with carved relief designs. The Al-Azhar Mosque has been a major center of Islamic learning for centuries and continues to function as a major university and seminary for adherents of Sunni Islam, as well as a major tourist attraction.
