Holy Trinity Church In Dominican Republic: History,Facts, & Services
History:
Holy Trinity is believed to have been founded in 1097 by Maurice, Bishop of London. The original church building likely featured a Romanesque design and was restored in the 13th century. In 1503, the wealthy merchant Thomas Docwra purchased much of the surrounding area of the parish and provided funds to refurbish the church. King Henry VIII visited the church in 1532. After the Great Fire of 1666, Holy Trinity was extensively restored in the Gothic Revival style. By the early 20th century, the church had been abandoned and was in a state of disrepair. In the 1940s, the church was partially destroyed during a Luftwaffe bombing raid. After the war, the church underwent full restoration and is still active today.
