History:

The National Botanical Garden (Jardín Botánico Nacional) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is located in the Mirador Sur Park on the Duarte Highway, which connects Lower Ozama in Santo Domingo with the Caribbean Sea. It was created in 1976 by decree 74-76 and was opened to the public in June of 1979. The garden is split into three sections consisting of both on-site and offsite components. The Onsite Section is divided into four main areas, Flora and Fauna, Agronomic, Trees, and Wetlands. The Flora and Fauna area holds a variety of species of plants, from native species which are unique to the Dominican Republic, to tropical plants from all around the world. The Agronomic section is dedicated to banquettes for farming as a way to teach and research organic farming methods. The Trees area is dedicated to trees and conserves mahogany, teak, ceiba, grenadilla and many other species at risk. The Wetlands area offers a haven for a variety of local and migratory birds. The Offsite Section consists of the Flora Expedition and the Botanical Gardens of the National Park Armando Bermudez which are located in the Cibao in the Dominican Republic. The Flora Expedition was established in 1949 and offers a unique opportunity for scientists to study the local flora. The Botanical Gardens of the National Park Armando Bermudez were created in 1975 and offer over one hundred species of endemic plants and trees. The National Botanical Garden has become a model for conservation in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean. It also serves as a research site for local and international universities and the Dominican government.
