History:
The founding of the Faro de Colón is linked to the navigator Christopher Columbus. It is one of the monuments located in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It is a symbol of power, mastery and dominion of the sea. The construction of the lighthouse was initiated in April of 1992 by President Joaquin Balaguer, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. The project was designed by the Catalonian architect Jose Luis Sert. It is located next to the remains of the wall of the first fortified city in America, the Alcázar de Colón of the colonial era; both elements are part of the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, a World Heritage Site. The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO declared the area a World Heritage Site in December of 1990. The construction of the monument was concluded in late 1992, and it is 141 meters high. This is the highest monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus in the New World. The Faro de Colon is part of a larger project that includes plans to build a library and a museum dedicated to the book, cultural heritage, and the numerous contributions of Christopher Columbus and the cultures that contributed to the creation of what is currently the Dominican Republic. The monument is considered one of the most important symbols of the city of Santo Domingo, since it serves as a point of reference to all those people that walk through the Colonial Zone or aim to visit the place, and also serves as a beacon of the city of Santo Domingo.
