History:

The Church of the Nativity, Opočno first began construction in 1603 and was completed in 1617. The design was strongly influenced by the Italian Baroque, and Roman scholars of the time. The construction was funded by the Grand Master of the Kostka Order, Adam Hartig. The church consists of a main altar, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, and two side chapels. The main chapel also features several important works of art, including an altarpiece, an oil painting and an ivory sculpture of the Virgin Mary. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Czechia.

The exterior of Church of the Nativity, Opočno displays an impressive façade of Baroque architecture. It is built in the style of a Greek cross, with four corner chapels, and a beautiful sculpted dome with four turrets. The interior is filled with beautiful paintings, frescoes and sculptures. One of the most famous pieces is the bronze statue of the Christ Child, carved by Karel Škoumal in 1690.
