History:

Puzhehei Scenic Area is located in the southwest of Qiubei County, Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan Province. The area is famous for its numerous karst landforms and encompassing 147 large and small lakes that are clean and green. The history of Puzhehei Scenic Area begins with the earliest nomads of the area. Hunters and herdsmen were the original inhabitants of the area and believed to have lived in the area from at least as early as 1500 BC. During the Yuan Dynasty (1279–1368), the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), and the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), Puzhehei was dominated by a nomadic culture. The area was gradually opened up and colonized by Chinese officials, merchants and settlers who began to build permanent settlements and to farm the land. During this period, Puzhehei became home to the Gelao ethnic minority. In the 1980s, Puzhehei was declared as a provincial-level scenic area, which inspired the local government to carry out an ecological development project. This project renewed and protected the natural landscape and ecosystems of the area and increased tourist visits to the area.
