History:

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, located in the Tuv Province of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, has been venerated by Mongolians since the day of Genghis Khan’s death in 1227. The mausoleum was established by Kublai Khan in 1280, shortly after the death of his grandfather Genghis Khan. Since that time, the mausoleum has been used by Mongols for venerating Genghis Khan and as a place to offer sacrifices. In the five centuries since its establishment, several buildings have been constructed around the mausoleum. In 1357, a temple complex was built to honor Genghis Khan, and later a marble statue of the warrior was added. At the start of the 15th century, the mausoleum was enlarged and a new gilt-covered coffin encased in white yak hair was placed inside. In 1955, the People’s Republic of China declared the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan one of the first historical places of national importance. Since then, the complex has been protected and managed by the state, including in 1980 when the historic site was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. During this time, a replica of the tomb was built and is currently maintained for visitors’ use. More recently, in 2009, a reconstruction project was launched to restore the mausoleum and surrounding temple complex as they were in the 15th century.
