History:

Ampato Mountain in Arequipa, Peru is a dormant stratovolcano located in the Andes. It lies southwest of the city of Arequipa and forms part of the Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu volcanoes volcanic complex. Its summit reaches 6370m (20, 908 ft) above sea level. The mountain is composed entirely of andesite which formsa steep sided cone. Ampato has had two known eruptions in recorded history, the first of which occurred in the 15th century and the second during a five year period of volcanic activity beginning in 1600. During this time Ampato emitted ash, rocks, and volcanic gases. Following the 1600 eruption, the volcano went dormant. The mountain has mythological significance in the local cultures, due to its vista being believed to attract mythological creatures and received offerings from the local peoples of Arequipa. It is the backdrop for the annual festival of Ollantaytambo, which takes place in February each year. In 1995, the mummified body of Incan ‘Ice Maiden’ Mummy Juanita was discovered on the summit of Ampato. She had been sacrificed by Incan priests about 500 years earlier. In 2005, the site was declared a National Cultural Heritage Site. In 2010, the mountain was designated part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu). Today Ampato remains an inactive volcano, viewed regularly by travelers and used in research by scientists.
