History:
Quinta Vergara Park in Viña del Mar, Chile, was once the main residence of the Vergara Family. Don Vicente Palma Vergara, the owner of the estate, wanted to be harmoniously integrated with the landscape and so designed gardens and trails in the grounds. It later became a Public Tourism Area of national interest and there are a number of artworks in the park that were commissioned in the 1940s. The estate was bought by the Chilean government in 1954, and the park was officially opened in 1956. Afterwards, it was transformed into an events venue. The families of the Vergara Family developed and expanded the park and built a great variety of attractions and features, like a mini zoo, a pool, the Shell theatre, a Japanese Garden and a sculpture garden, bringing together a variety of flora and fauna and shaping the park in a unique way. The park was selected as the venue for the world famous Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar in 1960. Since then, it has become a natural amphitheater hosting important events annually to international success. Its gardens are still a must-see attraction in the city, with internationally-known grounds, shows, exhibitions, music and musical theatrical performances, and even light and laser shows. In the early 2000s, the park was renovated and modernized, providing a great variety of services and attractions for visitors.
