History:

Anakena Beach is a small sandy beach on Easter Island, Chile, located on the northern coast of the island. The beach is often referred to as the “Birthplace of Easter Island” because it was the site of the Island's first settlers. Archaeological evidence suggests that around 2,000 years ago, the first settlers had already arrived in Easter Island and were living near Anakena Bay. The area around Anakena Beach was possibly used for cultivation, as evidenced by the numerous rocks used to cultivate land and the remnants of fish traps. The site also yielded remnants from the birdman cult, that have been dated to the 15th century. Anakena Beach was the site of one of Easter Island’s major industry’s, the production of obsidian tools that were used to carve the iconic Moai statues. However, the last of these tools were made in 1551, and it is assumed that the industry died out due to over-exploitation of the resources. In modern history, Anakena Beach has become a more peaceful site, popular as a tourist attraction. You can find restaurants, a bar, shade and a place to snorkel around Anakena Bay, as well as statues, carvings and petroglyphs. In recent years, Anakena Beach has become an increasingly popular site for ecotourism. The beach is home to a variety of species, including sea turtles, and is famed for its warm, aqua clear waters and picturesque white beach. Conservation efforts have been taken to help protect the beach and its surrounding ecosystem. You must visit one of these historical places in Chile on your Chile tour
