St Joseph's Metropolitan Cathedral In Cameroon is the main Catholic Church in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. The Cathedral is situated in the city centre and is home to a vibrant community of worshippers. It is dedicated to the North American Jesuit Mission coming to Cameroon during the late 19th century. It is one of the best churches in Cameroon which you must visit.

History:

The current St. Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral was built in 1954 to replace its predecessor which was destroyed during a fire in 1951. The foundation stone for the present Cathedral was laid on 29th April 1954. The first bishop of the Diocese of Cameroun, Mgr François Xavier Bordes, S.M.A. (1951-1956), was in charge of the construction. He then served as the first pastor at the cathedral from 1955-1956 and consecrated the Cathedral on 15th April 1956. The Cathedral is dedicated to the major saint of the Society of African Mission (S.M.A.), St. Joseph, the patron saint of Cameroun. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Cameroon.

- St Joseph's Metropolitan Cathedral is the oldest and largest church in Yaoundé and is an important landmark and tourist attraction. - In 1975, Pope Paul VI travelled to Yaoundé and inaugurated the Cathedral as a national pilgrimage center and metropolitan seat. - A statue of St. John Paul II stands in front of the cathedral to commemorate his visit in May 1985.
