In the 1880s, American missionary Stanley Pepperell led the effort to found an organized church in the area, which later became known as the Cameroon Baptist College and Missionary Society (CBCMS). Under the leadership of Dr. J.W. Gamble and later Dr. John Putnam, CBCMS received numerous converts to the Christian faith.
