Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Yaoundé In Cameroon: History,Facts, & Services

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Yaoundé is the Metropolitan see of the Roman Catholic Church in Cameroon. Established in December 1959, Yaoundé was the first archdiocese to be created in post-colonial Cameroon. The history of the Catholic Church in Cameroon began in 1890, when Cameroon was a German colony, with the arrival of Father William Höckele. In July 1910, prefects apostolic began to be appointed. On December 28, 1959, the Cameroonian prefecture apostolic was replaced by the Yaoundé Archdiocese. Today, the Archdiocese of Yaoundé spans 12 dioceses, one suffragan and 11 exempts, with a total of over 1,000,000 Catholics. It is led by Archbishop Samuel Kleda, who was appointed by Pope Francis in 2014. The Archdiocese of Yaoundé provides a variety of services to its members, including pastoral care, spiritual guidance, religious formation, catechism classes, and outreach programs that help serve the communities of Yaoundé and its surrounding dioceses. It also has charitable outreach programs and works in partnership with other organizations to provide aid to vulnerable communities.
