The British Colonial influence and the formation of the Anglican Church In Cameroon are closely linked with the start of the Christian Missionary Society (CMS) and their mission in the region. The CMS mission was initiated in 1844, with the first Anglican priest to arrive in Cameroon being Rev. William Dealtry. He was joined in 1858 by Bishop Alexander Samuel Wilberforce, who set up the church’s first diocese. Soon after, in 1860, the Church was officially launched, and the Cameroon Diocese was officially inaugurated in 1961. Today, the Church is split into three dioceses: Yaounde–Mbalmayo in the east, Douala–Edea in the south-west, and Kumbo in the north-west. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Cameroon.
