Preah Vihear Temple is an ancient Hindu temple situated on a cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, in the Preah Vihear province of northern Cambodia. Built as a key stronghold of the Khmer empire during the ninth century, Preah Vihear was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008. History:

The temple was constructed in the late 9th century under the reign of King Jayavarman II, the first ruler of the Khmer Empire. The temple was built to honor the gods Shiva and Vishnu, and was designed to display the power and might of the Khmer rulers. Preah Vihear Temple served as a political and religious center of the empire, and gained prominence when it was featured on the celebrated Angkor Wat reliefs. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Cambodia.

Preah Vihear Temple measures approximately 150 meters from east to west and has a total of five levels. It has several gates, gopuras, and balconies and is decorated with intricately carved Hindu imagery. Despite numerous renovations and restorations, much of the complex still stands in excellent condition today.
