Independence Monument Cambodia is a memorial located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was built in 1958 to commemorate Cambodia’s independence from France, which was won in 1953. The monument is a 35-meter high lotus-shaped stupa designed to look like a mountain topped with a five-headed Naga (a mythical sea serpent). The monument consists of several levels that represent various stages of liberation from the French colonial regime. The topmost level is adorned with statues of historical figures from the pre-colonial and colonial eras. Inside the monument are several chambers, including a chamber dedicated to King Norodom Sihanouk, who led Cambodia to independence. The monument is a popular tourist attraction and is considered one of the symbols of the national identity of Cambodia.
