History:
The church was built in 1868, after the old church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1803. The new design was a mix between Mannerist and Neo-Gothic styles. The building was restored in 2017, when a substantial part of the church's original stonework was replaced. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.

The church is comprised of three naves and a chancel, and was built from local sandstone. It is decorated with sculptures of the Four Evangelists and a bust of John the Baptist. The interior is decorated with frescoes, religious images and valuable furnishings, as well as an 18th-century pulpit.
