It was built in 1645 by two Portuguese monks, Friar Gonçalo da Guimarães and Friar Dom Luís de Vassoura. It is thought that they were inspired by the Church of Our Lady of the Pillar in the city of Segovia, Spain. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.
