Igreja dos Milagres was established in 1641 and was originally known as the Chapel of St. Valentine. It was later re-dedicated to Santa Tereza by Friar Antonio Gonsalves da Conceicao in 1786, who also added the decorative portions of the church’s interiors. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.

Igreja dos Milagres is listed as a National Historic Monument in Brazil, and was declared an Artistical Heritage of the State of Bahia by the Brazilian government in 1980. It is also home to a number of gilded ornamental fixtures, including a massive baroque altarpiece and intricate marble altars.
