Igreja do Coculi is believed to have been built in the 7th century AD. Throughout its history, the church has undergone numerous renovations and expansions. In the late 19th century, a Romanesque doorway was added, and the interior was decorated with Baroque style plasterwork. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.

The church is dedicated to Saint Coculi, a 13th-century mystic and penitent. It is said he was the first European saint to hear the name of Jesus in his prayers. The iconography of the site includes reliefs of the Virgin Mary, depicting her as the Mother of God, as well as several other figures. The structure also includes a small cemetery, where several prominent figures from Portuguese history are buried.
