History:
The church was first built in 1796 and stands on the site of the Franciscan Order of Santa Isabel. The original structure of the church was destroyed in a fire in 1844 which resulted in the adjacent buildings being added for protection and for access. In the 19th century, a second fire broke out and what remains of the Igreja de Santa Isabel was reconstructed in 1865. Services are held every day of the week and the church is open to visitors. Special services are held on the last Sunday of each month, and a number of festivals are held throughout the year.
