The origins of the chapel date back to the 12th century, when a Romanesque chapel dedicated to St. Mary of the Sun is known to have existed on the site. Throughout the centuries, the chapel was remodeled in a number of different styles, first to a Gothic style in the 14th century, and then again in the 16th century in a Manueline architectural style. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.
