Capela de São José was first built in 1757 and is the oldest church in Rio de Janeiro. The first service in the chapel was held in October 1757. The chapel quickly gained popularity and by 1817 it was already a major pilgrimage spot for the population of Rio de Janeiro. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in CABO VERDE.
