The church's history is fascinating. In the 1940s, The United Methodist Church began to send missionaries to Cote D’Ivoire in response to the spiritual needs of the time. During this time, a small group of United Methodist congregations formed, as well as numerous prayer meetings in private homes. In 1972, after long discussions and debates, seven congregations joined together to form the first official body of African Methodists. This new church was named Eglise Methodiste Unie Bethanie Cote D'Ivoire (EMUBECI).
The principles and doctrines of the church remain the same as those laid out by John Wesley, the original founder of the Methodist Church. The church adheres to an open, inclusive model of worship. It utilizes contemporary music and innovative worship approaches to reach a diverse congregational population.
The church provides an array of services and activities to meet the various needs of its congregation. These include Bible study, prayer meetings, Sunday school, youth leadership, fellowship activities, music ministries, and social ministry outreach. EMUBECI also organizes regular conferences, events, and workshops to discuss and engage in theological issues and to provide guidance and support to its members.
These services have been immensely successful in broadening the scope and impact of the United Methodist Church in Cote D’Ivoire. The church has experienced tremendous growth over the years, and is now one of the leading Methodist Churches of Africa. It is a strong and united community striving to make a difference in the lives of its members and the communities it serves.
