History:
The construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption occurred in the mid-19th century and was completed in the late 1870s. It was built in a neogothic style and with a mixture of colonial baroque architecture. The cathedral has a unique history in the El Salvadoran region due to its status as a symbol of national pride and patriotism. It served as a place for mourning after the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero in 1980 as well as a place of celebration for the country’s subsequent peace treaty. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Burkina Faso.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption stands at a height of 109 meters (360 feet) and is the tallest and most visible building in San Salvador. Its bell towers measure 50 meters tall and can be seen throughout the city. The cathedral also houses the tombs of Archbishop Oscar Romero, who is believed to be a martyr of the human rights cause, and two other former archbishops.
