History:
is the first cathedral of the Archdiocese of Fortaleza and the cradle of Roman Catholic Faith in the State of Ceará. The History of St. Joseph Cathedral dates back to 1842 when the construction started. The foundation stone was laid on December 1842 and the construction took nearly 12 years to complete. The Cathedral was finally solemnly consecrated on March 25, 1854. The early 20th century saw some major renovation to the Cathedral. The Sacristy of the Cathedral was remodeled in the year 1921 and during the decade that followed several parts were renovated and extended. The most recent renovation was done in the year 2009, when the historical facade was remodeled for the first time. It is one of the best churches in Brazil which you must visit.

The towers are made of reinforced concrete and brick and are topped with ornamental pinnacles. 8. The interior of the Cathedral is composed of 8 naves, six of which were destroyed with the construction of the cities bypass in 1987, but later restored. It now consists of marble support columns and arches, stained glass windows and elaborate chandeliers. 9. The Cathedral also houses a Baroque organ built in 1897 from materials imported from France. 10. The façade of the Cathedral is decorated with two statues, depicting the four evangelists, and a large rose window, above a carved portal.
