History:

Iguazu Falls is located within the Natural Park of the Iguazú River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. The falls are part of a system of some 275 waterfalls that were formed by a volcanic eruption millions of years ago. The first known settlers to visit Iguazu Falls were the Guarani Indians. In 1541, Spanish conquistador Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca is thought to have discovered Iguazu Falls, with Spanish Jesuit priests establishing missions in the area in the late 16th century. Explorers of the European powers, including Portugal, Great Britain, and France, travelled to the falls in the late 18th century. In 1933, Iguazu Falls was designated a national park in both Argentina and Brazil. In the 1950s, the Brazilian government began plans to build a dam on the Iguazu River, which would have almost certainly submerged a large part of the falls. Fierce criticism from environmental activists and celebrities alike put a stop to this plan and in 1984, Iguazu Falls was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
