History:

Matsieng Royal Palace is a traditional regal residence in centre of Botswana. The palace was founded by queen ‘Meaeng, the mother of Matsieng, a paramount ruler of the Bakaa people in the 19th century. It became the centre of the Bakaa nation because it was believed to be a place where ancestral spirits came and blessed the land. Its inhabitants included royalty, religious holders, farmers, hunters, and other members of society. The palace was a major centre of politico-religious life in the country. It was the home of the Paramount Chief (Kgosi) and his family, the courtiers/advisers, and representatives of the gods and ancestral spirits. This spot was believed to be the birthplace of all people of Bakaa descent, and a place of religious significance in the community. The palace was heavily damaged during a civil war in the late 19th century, but was rebuilt in the early 20th century under the Kgosi Losaletse. It was expanded and remodelled in the 1950s by the then Kgosi, Solofoni Tlhaelo, and further expanded by his successor, Kgosi Tshekedi Kgafela.
