It was founded in 1993 when the Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Africa, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia, and the United Congregations of the Lutheran Church in Angola and Mozambique merged. It is a multiethnic and multilingual church, with members drawn from black, white and coloured communities. The church has a membership of around 110,000 people, and around 500 active pastors. The church is committed to mission and outreach, advocating social justice, equipping its members to explore their faith and spirituality, and making disciples of Jesus Christ in order to share the gospel with others.
