History:
Torre de la Recoleta (Recoleta Tower) was built in the mid-1800s as a prominent part of the city of Sucre in Bolivia. It was built upon the highest hill in the city with the intention of it becoming a beacon for ships arriving in the city from the harbor. Initially, the Recoleta Tower was used as a watchtower, lighthouse, and beacon for new arrivals and the navigation of ships entering the city. The tower’s architecture was modeled on traditional French design with its four external columns. Its walls were made of adobes, a traditional mud-like material. The tower’s interior consisted of three floors and a cupola at its peak. The top floor served as a meeting room for the adjacent San Francisco Church. The tower was decommissioned in the mid-1900s as navigation technology made its design obsolete. For many years, the structure was abandoned and left to deteriorate due to lack of maintenance. Fortunately, in 2018 a restoration project was undertaken by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage of Bolivia. Today, the tower is a popular tourist site and is listed as a historic monument.
