The Church of Our Lady of Courtrai is an early Gothic architecture religious building in the former Flemish city of Kortrijk, Belgium. Built between 1220 and 1240 as a Carmelite church by the Carmelites of Courtrai, it is the oldest church in the city and an important historical monument. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom the chapel was linked in 1230, making it one of the oldest Marian cults in Europe. It is one of the best churches in Belgium which you must visit.

History:

The Church of Our Lady of Courtrai has been in use since 1220, when it was built by the Carmelites of Courtrai to serve their monastic and conventual practices. It was commissioned by the Bishop of Tournai, who wanted to establish a place of worship for the people of the area. The church was initially built in the Romanesque style, however, the nave was remodeled in the Gothic style in the early 13th century. The Church of Our Lady of Courtrai has played a major role in the history of Kortrijk. In 1237, it was the setting for the signing of the Treaty of Courtrai, which ended the dispute between the Count of Flanders and the King of France over the succession to the County of Flanders. During both World Wars, the church was significantly damaged, but was restored between 1959 and 1964. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Belgium.
