History:

The Brabo Fountain, located in front of the famous Brabo Fountain in Antwerp, Belgium, is a Fountain statue of the Roman god Brabo hurling a stone into the Scheldt river. The fountain was created in 1887 to commemorate the heroic deed of a native folk hero Antigoon, who is believed to have lived in the area in the days before the city was founded. According to the legend, the giant Antigoon had demanded a toll from anyone who wished to cross the Scheldt river and his victims had to cut off their right hand, tied it to a rope and thrown it into the river. The hero, called Silvius Brabo, eventually defeated Antigoon and cut off the giant’s hand, throwing it into the river. The fountain commemorates this brave act and the story behind it.
