Formally dedicated in 1932, the Great Ocean Road marks its 85th anniversary in 2017 and is one of the world’s largest war memorials, which was built to commemorate the servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War. The building of the Great Ocean Road began in 1919 by returned servicemen under the services of the Great Ocean Road Trust, with the view to constructing a coastal industry. Most of the labour force was ex-servicemen from the Great War and by 1922, almost 6,000 of them had worked on the project. Official opening took place in November 1932 with Governor Sir George Berendon in attendance.
