The Armenian Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Narek is the largest and most important Armenian Catholic cathedral in the world. It is located in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Holy Sepulchre. It is believed to be the first Armenian Catholic Church ever built. The Armenian Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Narek was consecrated in August 1874 by the Armenian Catholic Patriarch, Father Nerses Ezekilean. The cathedral was made possible through the generous donations of members of the Armenian community in Jerusalem and abroad.
This impressive edifice was built in Gothic Revival style, with a facade of sandstone and one wing arched to form a bell tower. It is crowned with a large dome with a single cross at its peak. Inside, the Cathedral is very large, with its interior walls featuring frescoes depicting the life of Jesus. The Cathedral also contains many artifacts, such as the Cross of St. Gregory, relics of St. Gregory and Abbot Dolabani, and the remains of an ancient painting from the 15th century. It is a popular destination for Armenians from all over the world.
The Armenian Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Narek is an important place of worship and is served by the Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem, who is assisted by a clergy of Armenian priests and deacons. The Cathedral offers Sunday Mass, Armenian musical performances and screenings of documentaries about Armenia. It also provides relief to the poor in the Old City of Jerusalem.
