History:

The Antigua Botanical Gardens, located in the north-western part of Antigua and Barbuda, are the only botanical gardens in the country. The gardens were established in the early 20th century by Dr. Alexander A. Harney, an American botanist who traveled throughout Central America and the Caribbean for his research. Dr. Harney obtained several of his plants from the Antigua Forestry Department and decided that the perfect place to share them with the public would be in the lush Antigua Botanical Gardens. Dr. Harney, with the assistance of the locals, designed many of the gardens, focusing on creating a habitat that would promote the growth and conservation of the many plant species that called the gardens home. This included the addition of many water features, rockeries, and pathways through the secluded woods.
