La Vella, the Plaça del Poble is a public space located between Carrer Prat de La Creu and Carrer Bonaventura Vinyes, at the centre of the old part of the city. It is one of the most important squares in town, as it has been used as a meeting point for locals since ancient times. The square dates back to the fourteenth century when, after seeding, it was known as Plaça Major, Plaça de la Cèrica (Market Square), or Plaça de la Llacuna (Hole Square, referring to its sunken shape). Since then, it has been the focal point of the city and it is one of the main attractions of the historic center of Andorra La Vella. The original plan of the square was modified in different ways in the nineteenth century. In 1815, an arched fountain was located at the center of the square, and a three-story building replaced the popular market in that same year. Throughout the nineteenth century, other important works were continued in the square, such as the construction of the old Town Hall in 1868 and a new monumental fountain in 1882. The Plaça del Poble was the location of different political acts in modern Andorra, such as both the first and second inaugurations of the Andorran Prime Minister Jaume Bartumeu in 1993 and 1997. In 2005, the square underwent a comprehensive transformation, similar to its original look. Its character and charm changed significantly, making it a much more attractive place to visit. In the last part of the twentieth century, the Plaça del Poble became a major meeting point for all Andorrans. Every year several important events take place in the square, such as the traditional Christmas caroling and the Childrens' Day. It also features monuments dedicated to different politicians, authors and religious figures connected with the history of Andorra. The Plaça del Poble is a historical and cultural space, the living history of Andorra.
