History:

Les Escaldes, Escaldes-Engordany is a parish located in the Principality of Andorra. It is one of the seven parishes contained within the small nation. The creation of Escaldes-Engordany dates back to 1278. That is when the Count of Urgell and the Bishop of Urgell signed an agreement granting the territories within the valley to the count as part of a feudal system. Les Escaldes, then known as Esclañs, was initially formed as an agricultural parish. Its economy was based on the production of grain, wine, and cheese. In the 19th century, industry began to develop in the area and factories for the production of shoes, textiles, and soap were opened. In 1978, a major dam was constructed across the Valira River, creating the artificial lake of Engolasters. This was done in part to meet the electric power need of Escaldes and the rest of the principality. In the following decades, Escaldes-Engordany grew to be the administrative and economic center of the principality. Many public offices and organizations are located here, in addition to international corporations and financial institutions. The city is also known for its modern shopping centers and cultural life. There are numerous museums, galleries, and monuments in the city, as well as many parks, shopping centers, and restaurants. The Olympic Museum, located in the Plaza Europa in Les Escaldes, is a must-see for tourist and locals alike. The museum celebrates the achievements of Andorran athletes and the legacy of the Olympic Games in the principality. Les Escaldes-Engordany is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in Andorra. Its interesting history, remarkable architecture, and unique lifestyle make it a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to the principality.
