Worship Method:
At Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in Sultanpur Lodhi, Punjab, the method of worship is based on the practices established by Guru Nanak himself. Devotees enter the Gurudwara and bow down in a gesture of respect and reverence. Prayers are said and spiritual hymns are sung, the most popular of which is Guru's hymn (Jappedar). Afterwards, prayers are said to seek guidance and blessing of the Guru. The Guru Granth Sahib (Holy Book) is then brought out from the sanctum-sanctorum and placed on a raised platform. Devotees then circumambulate it three times in a clockwise direction, paying silent prayers and expressing their devotion. Devotees then take their seats and listen to a sermon or preachings from the Granth. Then sweets and prasad (holy offering) are distributed among the devotees. Kirtan recital follows the sermon and devotees meditate and reflect on the teachings of Guru Nanak. Finally, Ardas (general prayer) is said collectively and devotees take a part of the prasad (Jalabhishek) and leave the premises after offering their Namaste to the Guru.
